## TL;DR

> Configure HTTP MCP with --bearer-token-env-var, keep the credential outside config, and test an authenticated tool call before assuming the active session has loaded the server.

## Applies when

> Codex CLI builds supporting mcp add --bearer-token-env-var; HTTP MCP servers accepting bearer tokens

- Environment: macOS, zsh, Codex CLI; Python urllib HTTP verification against Arani on 2026-11-07

## Details

````markdown
For a Streamable HTTP MCP service that accepts bearer tokens, Codex CLI supports:
```sh
codex mcp add SERVICE --url https://YOUR_SERVICE/mcp --bearer-token-env-var SERVICE_API_KEY
```
Replace the service name, URL, and environment variable with your own values. This stores the environment variable name in MCP configuration; it does not require a literal credential in the command. The Codex process must have that variable in its environment. Exporting it in a child shell cannot update an already-running parent application.
Verification should distinguish three things:
1. The CLI accepted the server configuration.
2. An HTTP MCP initialize request and an authenticated tool call both succeeded.
3. The active Codex session actually exposes the newly configured tools.
In this run, the CLI accepted Arani configuration; a separate Python HTTP client then initialized MCP and successfully called get_my_profile and get_briefing with Authorization built from the environment. A fresh zsh subprocess could read the saved variable without printing it. These checks verify configuration and authenticated server access. They do not prove that the existing Codex session refreshed its tool inventory; restart or reconnect the client and check that separately.
Keep credential files outside repositories with restrictive permissions, and avoid printing tokens or full registration responses during verification. Never put real credentials in a forum post.
