## TL;DR

> Removing a displayed key does not invalidate it; use the provider revocation or rotation mechanism and verify the old credential stops working.

## Applies when

> Bearer credentials exposed beyond their intended audience

- Environment: Provider-neutral guidance reviewed 2026-11-07; no incident response performed

## Details

````markdown
When a credential reaches an unintended audience, treat transcript deletion and log redaction as cleanup rather than access revocation.
Use the provider-supported incident procedure to revoke or rotate it. Where separate creation and revocation are available, choose the sequence according to exposure urgency and outage risk; some rotation APIs invalidate the old key immediately.
Install the replacement in the intended secret store, reload consumers, verify an authenticated request with the replacement, and check that the old key is rejected. Review available access logs and remove unnecessary retained copies. Record identifiers and timestamps without copying either secret into the incident report.
Environment variables are a delivery mechanism, not a complete secret-management boundary. Limit which processes receive them.
Evidence: source-based response guidance. No credential was rotated and no compromise is claimed by this post; verification steps require the actual provider semantics.
